Krishna, my husband, loves to spend his spare time improving his photography skills. Many of our travels are planned around photography opportunities, in fact we could say we attend many of our own self-directed photo-safaris! Travelling with such a passionate photographer puts a spin on tourism and adventuring out that even in typical tourist areas puts us 'off the beaten path.'

This year, one of our wonderful, mysterious, mystical trips landed us in Kanchipuram, town of one thousand temples in South India. Spending just over a day is not enough, we understand, but within this short time, my wonderful friends of course showered their love and care on us showing us the best hospitality in Kanchipuram, taking us to several temples and areas of sari weavers. Of one of the hundreds of photos taken, Krishna was moved to submit the below photo of Vaikuntha Perumal temple. This wonderful temple is a unique offering. Inside the prayer area (grabha graha), there is a place behind the gods where people can crawl around the back of the gods to circle the temple. I did not do this, though other women in saris ahead of us did prove their skill in sari wearing by crawling in that space. Krishna did it and mentioned was one of the most interesting temple experiences to date. Because I myself could not crawl behind, this temple of course leaves more mystical impressions on me.

For those looking for a way to inspire cross-cultural sharing, I have created a unique India-America Cross-Cultural Interfaith and Secular Calendar entirely in English with almost 100 special observances, holidays and holy-days!

This is a unique calendar, which has been years in the making. I have compiled calendars of different faiths and cultures together in this unique, easy to read and follow 12 month, grid-style calendar that is downloadable and accessible when not online! You can print it out, hang it on the wall. Share it with your children, your neighbors, your children's teachers to promote cross-cultural sharing.

Parthen Rasithen - Songs I Saw and Enjoyed!

This was a popular movie out when I lived in India between 1999-2001. My friend told me Parthen Rasithen in Tamil means "I saw and I enjoyed."

The actors in this movie are Prashanth, Laila and Simran.

Kaddai Kala- This song has a fast, almost folk-song like beat with some guitar tones! See the part around the three minute mark, the 'broom dance'. My friend told me they won some award for this dance. I quite like that move! The bridges you see in the sequence were newly built at that time, in India, called flyovers!

Parthen Rasithen - Hero Prashanth and heroine Laila fall in love by happening upon the same bus route everyday!

I like this song a lot though it has a sad meaning. I like this movie very much. The acting was superb! I want to have this on DVD- anyone know where I can download/buy this?

I am also looking for the video of my favorite song from this movie - Damakku Damakku Dum. Anyone have this?

The good thing on this song clip is the English subtitles compliment the Tamil- so more can understand the beauty of the song and of the poetry of Tamil!!

First time I saw this movie was in early 2000s. I really enjoyed this song in the picture sequence and the tune. I just hope the words are as good considering my lack of Tamil translation ability!

In this other video, Dil Dil Dil Manadhil, the girl has 'two faces.' One she has what Americans may call a unibrow- one long eyebrow connected all the way across (some friends in India used to tell me this was good luck). In the unibrow version, she is not wearing a bindi and has two braided pig tails. I wonder if this the 'Muslim' version of her character without her purdah is in the video below. In the second version of the girl, she has her hair back only partially, rest is down and straight. She has a big bindi and is wearing sari. Here her eyebrows are separated. In this other costume, she also has more prominent earrings and jewelry in her hair.

I just love this song and this movie. Actually this is one movie I like all the songs! Eventually I will post them, too.

The acting by Prabhu (sax player) in this piece is amazing. So much feeling.

I think the movie's name is Raja with Ajith Kumar and Jyothika.

Today is the first time I have heard this song. It has a nice tune. Hopefully the lyrics are equally suitable.

I particularly like Jyothika's sari in the beginning- the gold/rust combination is superb!

Yet another Vijay hit song that I like. This is a song from Movie, Kushi with Jyothika. I saw this movie in Pallavaram, Chennai when it was released. My friends took me because the heroine was named Jennifer and was studying at Madras Christian College, just like I was at that time!

Ok, people who know me know I am not a Vijay fan, but I really like this song! I can even watch it and survive still liking the song!

Additionally, I love the saris Simran wears in this video. They were all the rage in Chennai when I was there as the movie was released- specifically the plain sari with white lacy-looking border. I am fond only of this song in the movie, but if you want to hear all the songs, click here.

I saw this movie from a DVD with English subtitles. I seem to prefer these historical documentaries. It did not hurt that it was a superb rendition, also.

I saw this movie when it was released in Kanchipuram. We were the only ones in the theatre minus a die-hard Jyothika fan who couldn't stop shouting and swooning when ever she came on screen.

I guess this movie was not very popular, but I am not sure why. I think it was great. Though, I guess it is not typical a Tamil movie storyline in some ways. The hero is an American actor, Bentley Mitchum, who played an American grad student (If my memory serves correctly) to study a Hindu temple for an anthropology assignment. His home stay is with the family of Jyothika's character, and of course we know where it goes from there.

I really like this song. At one time I had the lyrics in Tamil with English translations, but now am missing it. Please post it below if you have it.

This song is sung by Sujatha. Another song I love sung by Sujatha is the song Ambadi Payagal, from the Malayalam movie Chanadranudikkunna Dikhil.

Amma Endrazhaikkaatha- Mannan

I don't think I watched this movie, ever, but the sentiments of the song have stayed with me. The melody is very mesmerising as well.

One interesting tid bit about this song. We stayed in Hotel Sea View in Kanyakumari in 2007. While eating Pongal, vada, sambar for breakfast a familiar musak was playing. It haunted me. I knew it was one of my favorite Tamil songs. It was none other than this very song!

In this video one part of Tamil culture comes around the 3 minute mark. He gives his mom a hair bath with oil and then as he finishes a one second scene shows some smoke from camphor or something placed under her hair. Anyone knows what this is? I guess there is some good quality for the hair. Is there a Tamil word for this process? Can you write the process in Tamil and in English in comments below? Thank you.

This is possibly my favorite song of all time! It is from the Tamil song, Pudiya Mugam. The meaning is mindblowing. I don't have the full English translation at present.
